Have you been experiencing headaches? Facial pain? Earaches or jaw tension? Maybe you’ve been feeling dizzy or grinding your teeth? While these aches and pains may not seem to have much in common at first glance, they’re all symptoms of a TMJ condition.
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) refers to the joints and muscles responsible for opening and closing your jaw. When problems arise in these joints, often as the result of a misalignment or dislocation, the results can be painful. Luckily, we have a variety of procedures available to correct these issues and make you more comfortable.
We use a T-Scan computerized system to quickly analyze your bite in-office and determine where misalignments are causing trouble. Depending on the nature and severity of your condition, we may recommend a bite splint, therapeutic mouthguard, or a nightguard to adjust your bite and prevent tooth-grinding. When TMJ/TMD symptoms include migraines or severe headaches, the use of a migraine therapy appliance is also an option. This custom-made device acts as a partial bite guard to alleviate jaw-clenching as you sleep. In certain cases, minor procedures can offer more immediate or longer-lasting relief. One such treatment, called equilibration, involves reshaping the surfaces of your teeth to achieve a more stable bite.
As always, your dentist and the team at Caring Smiles will discuss potential treatments with you to find a solution that suits your needs. Our goal is to get you out of pain as soon as possible, so you can get back to doing the things you love – no painkillers required.
