There are several common causes of tooth sensitivity, but there’s something they all have in common: damaged enamel. When enamel is not correctly functioning as a protective shield, it exposes the more delicate tissue and nerves inside your teeth. So, what causes damaged enamel?
One of the most common culprits when it comes to tooth sensitivity is your brushing technique. While you should brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, you should brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristled brush. Brushing vigorously in an effort to finish more quickly backfires as it can have an abrasive effect on your enamel.
A diet high in acidic foods can also damage enamel, as acid in food and drink joins forces with the acid the bacteria in your mouth produces as it break down in food. Even though tooth enamel is the strongest surface in your body, it’s no match for a constant assault in the form of acid.
A poor dental hygiene routine can also lead to sensitive teeth. If you give bacteria and acid in your mouth a chance to develop into plaque and later tartar, these substances begin to wear away on your enamel and can even develop into cavities. Again, damaged enamel increases the sensitivity of your teeth.
